  • One Year of Beyond Potential: Lessons from Behind the Mic

What started as a “let’s just give it a go” experiment has grown into something we are incredibly proud of. The Beyond Potential podcast recently marked its first birthday! 44 episodes in, countless conversations, and a fair bit of waffling (our words, not yours). To celebrate, co-hosts Tom Emery and Tom Mason recorded a special anniversary episode reflecting on the journey so far: what they’ve learned, how it’s shaped their thinking, and why podcasting turned out to be far more than a side project.

Here are some of the highlights.

1. Bravery beats polish

In the early days, there was hesitation. Would anyone listen? What if it sounded unpolished? Would people judge?

As it turns out, done is better than perfect. Putting something into the world, even when it’s not flawless, has opened the door to richer conversations, new relationships, and surprising moments of connection.

The lesson? You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start.

2. Podcasting builds presence and confidence

While both Toms are used to facilitating rooms and leading conversations, podcasting introduced a new kind of discipline: staying present, listening deeply, and being comfortable with uncertainty.

Over time, it’s built confidence—not just in their ability to speak off-the-cuff, but to hold space, respond intuitively, and be more comfortable with imperfection. That confidence has filtered into coaching sessions, workshops, and leadership gatherings.

3. Ask better questions

One of the most significant lessons from the podcast? The power of incisive questions.

As Tom Emery shared, they’ve become more intentional about drawing out specific insights from guests, not just giving them the mic, but using curiosity to dig into the parts of their story that resonate most with listeners. Great questions are at the heart of great coaching, and that same skill applies to podcasting.

4. Relationships are the real ROI

Beyond downloads or shares, the most meaningful outcome of Beyond Potential has been the relationships. Many of the guests, some well-known, others less so, have become part of our community. They’ve brought fresh thinking, challenged assumptions, and inspired others to step into their own potential.

This milestone is a chance to say a heartfelt thank you to every guest who’s joined us. Your courage, insights, and generosity have shaped this podcast into something truly special.

5. What’s next?

The vision for Beyond Potential is growing. More guests. Deeper conversations. And a continued focus on real, relatable stories about leadership, growth, and performance.

There’s also a clear invitation: if you’ve got something to share or someone you think we should speak to, get in touch.

Plus, we’re taking things further…
